Mulch, gravel, soil, and concrete are sold by volume — and the units switch between cubic feet (bags) and cubic yards (bulk) depending on where you shop. The conversion is simple, the mistakes are expensive, and one number does most of the work: 27.
What a cubic foot and a cubic yard actually are
A cubic footis the volume of a box 1 ft on every side — roughly the size of a basketball's shipping box, or one bag of the smaller mulch size. A cubic yard is a box 3 ft on every side. Since a yard is 3 feet:

For a mental picture: a standard washing machine is around 3–4 cubic feet of drum inside a roughly 10-cubic-foot cabinet, while a cubic yard is a cube about waist-high on most adults that would fill the entire back of a full-size pickup bed (and exceed its payload with anything heavier than mulch).
Suppliers quote bulk materials in cubic yards ("a yard of mulch") because project volumes get awkward in cubic feet. Both units measure the same thing; the only skill is converting cleanly.
The one formula: area × depth
Every mulch bed, gravel pad, and concrete slab is just an area with a thickness:
volume (cu ft) = area (sq ft) × depth (ft)
volume (cu yd) = volume (cu ft) ÷ 27The trap is depth. Depths are almost always spoken in inches — 3 inches of mulch, 4 inches of concrete — but the formula needs feet. Divide inches by 12 first:
3 in = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
4 in = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
6 in = 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ftMultiplying square feet by inchesgives a number 12× too big — if your "cubic feet" result seems absurd, this is almost always why.
Three worked examples
Mulch bed. A 25 ft × 4 ft bed at 3 inches deep:
area = 25 × 4 = 100 sq ft
depth = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
volume = 100 × 0.25 = 25 cu ft = 25 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.93 cu yd

Bags vs. bulk
Bagged material is priced per bag and sized in cubic feet; bulk is priced per cubic yard. To compare them you need the bag count for a yard:
bags per cubic yard = 27 ÷ bag size (cu ft)
3 cu ft bags: 27 ÷ 3 = 9 bags per yard
2 cu ft bags: 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 bags per yard
1.5 cu ft bags: 27 ÷ 1.5 = 18 bags per yard
0.5 cu ft bags: 27 ÷ 0.5 = 54 bags per yardCommon sizes: mulch in 2 or 3 cu ft bags, soils and amendments in 1–1.5 cu ft bags, decorative stone in 0.5 cu ft bags. So "a yard of mulch" is 13.5 of the standard 2-cu-ft bags — if bulk costs less than about 13 bags, bulk wins on price, and it usually does once you need 2+ yards. Bags win on convenience: no delivery fee, no driveway pile, spread at your own pace, return the extras.
Weight vs. volume: the part that surprises people
A cubic yard is a fixed size, not a fixed weight. Approximate figures, which vary with moisture and material:

The practical consequences: a half-ton pickup can carry a full yard of mulch but only a fraction of a yard of gravel; wet material weighs noticeably more than dry; and hauling debris means a dumpster can hit its weight limit long before it looks full.
Why stone is sold by the ton
Many stone yards price gravel by the tonrather than the yard. The reason is honesty in measurement: trucks drive over a scale, so weight is exact, while a "yard" in a loader bucket is an eyeball estimate that also changes with moisture and how loosely the material sits.
Converting between the two uses the material's density. A commonly used rule of thumb for crushed stone is roughly 1.3–1.4 tons per cubic yard:
tons ≈ cubic yards × 1.35 (typical crushed stone, varies by product)

Ordering tips: rounding, minimums, and dumpsters
A few practical notes for when the math meets a real supplier:
- Bulk yards come in coarse increments. Most suppliers sell in half-yard or full-yard steps, and many have a 1-yard minimum. A calculated 0.93 yards is a 1-yard order; 4.9 yards is a 5-yard order.
- Round up, not down. Spreading slightly thicker absorbs extra mulch or gravel invisibly; running out at 90% coverage means a second delivery fee. This is the volume version of a waste factor.
- Check truck capacity. A single dump truck commonly hauls somewhere in the range of 10–14 cubic yards of aggregate; bigger orders arrive as multiple loads, sometimes with multiple fees. Ask when you order.
