How this calculator works
The calculator splits a rectangular deck into its two big material groups — decking (the boards you walk on) and framing (the structure underneath) — and estimates each from your dimensions.
For decking, the core formula is:
rows = deck width (in) ÷ (board face width + gap) → rounded up
boards = rows × (deck length ÷ board length) → rounded up
buy = boards × (1 + waste %) → rounded upFor framing, it uses simplified layout rules that it states openly: joists at your chosen spacing, a beam line for every 8 feet of joist run, a post every 6 feet along each beam, and one concrete footing per post. Those rules produce realistic quantities for shopping, but they are not a structural design — lumber sizes and spans must still be checked against a span table or your local building department.
Fasteners are counted from geometry too: every place a deck board crosses a joist needs two screws, so the screw estimate is board–joist crossings × 2, plus your waste factor.
Worked example: a 16 × 12 ft deck
Say you're planning a 16 ft × 12 ft deck with 6-in (5-1/2 in actual) boards, a 1/4-in gap, 16 ft board stock, and 10% waste:
- Rows: the 12 ft width is 144 in; each row covers 5.5 + 0.25 = 5.75 in; 144 ÷ 5.75 = 25.04 → 26 rows.
- Boards: each 16 ft board covers a full row, so 26 boards base; with 10% waste, 28.6 → buy 29 boards.
- Joists: at 16 in on center along the 16 ft length: (192 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13 joists, each 12 ft long, plus rim boards.
- Posts and footings: two beam lines (12 ft of joist run ÷ 8, rounded up), and posts at most 6 ft apart along 16 ft means 3 bays → 4 posts each → 8 posts and 8 footings.
- Concrete: eight 12-in × 24-in footings hold about 12.6 cu ft total — about 21 bags of 80 lb mix.

How to measure for a deck
- Length and width: measure the finished deck surface, not the framing. If the deck attaches to the house, length is usually the side along the wall.
- Height above grade: measure from the ground to the top of the finished walking surface at the tallest point — sloped yards should use the highest measurement, since that controls post length and guardrail requirements.
- Check for square: for a rectangle, measure both diagonals; they should match within an inch or so.
- Slope and obstacles: note downspouts, hose bibs, vents, and windows that affect ledger placement before finalizing dimensions.

Buying deck materials
- Board length matters more than count. If your deck is 16 ft long, 16 ft boards mean zero butt joints; two 8 ft boards per row add joints and waste. Match stock length to your deck dimension when you can.
- Composite vs. wood:composite boards usually require 16-in or tighter joist spacing and hidden fasteners sold per square foot of coverage — check the manufacturer's installation sheet before buying framing.
- Pressure-treated lumber for framing: use ground-contact rated lumber for posts and any framing near grade, and hot-dip galvanized or stainless hardware rated for treated lumber.
- Buy the waste allowance. Crooked boards, damaged ends, and cutting mistakes are normal. Returns are usually easy; a second delivery fee is not.
Common estimating mistakes
- Forgetting the gap:26 rows with a gap becomes 27–28 rows without one on wider decks. The calculator includes the gap; boards installed tight (some composites) need the gap set to the manufacturer's spec.
- Ignoring framing: decking is often only half the lumber bill. Joists, beams, posts, hangers, and concrete add up fast.
- Using nominal instead of actual widths:a "6-inch" deck board is 5-1/2 inches wide. Estimating with 6 inches shorts you about 9% of your boards.
- Skipping the permit conversation: attached decks and decks over 30 inches high are regulated nearly everywhere in the U.S. A quick call before buying avoids redesigning after.
Limitations
This tool estimates a rectangular deck only, models beams and posts with simplified spacing rules, and does not size lumber for spans, calculate loads, or design stairs and railings to code. It also excludes joist hangers, ledger hardware, flashing, and blocking — line items your lumberyard can help quantify once framing is finalized. Treat the output as a planning list to price and sanity-check, not a build plan.
Frequently asked questions
How many deck boards do I need per square foot?
With 5-1/2 in boards and a 1/4 in gap, one square foot of deck needs about 2.09 linear feet of board. A 200 sq ft deck therefore needs roughly 420 linear feet of decking before waste — the calculator converts that into whole boards for your chosen stock length.
What waste percentage should I use for decking?
10% covers most straight-laid rectangular decks. Use 15% or more for diagonal (45°) decking, picture-frame borders, or decks whose length doesn't divide evenly into stock board lengths. See the waste guide for details.
How deep do deck footings need to be?
Deep enough to sit below your local frost line, which ranges from a few inches in the South to 4+ feet in the northern U.S. The 24-inch default here is only a placeholder for volume math — your building department will tell you the required depth for permits.
Can I use this calculator for composite decking?
Yes — set the board width to the composite board's actual width (most are 5.5 in) and keep joist spacing at 16 in or tighter per the manufacturer. Note that composite systems often use hidden clips instead of screws, sold by coverage area.
Does the estimate include railing and stair materials?
It estimates railing linear footage and post counts, and a stair allowance (stringers and treads) when you enable stairs. Railing systems vary too much in style and price for a universal parts list, so price your chosen system per linear foot.
