How this calculator works
A paver patio is a layered system, and each layer is estimated separately: the pavers on top, a bedding sand layer they sit on, a compacted gravel base underneath, polymeric sand swept into the joints, and an edge restraint holding the perimeter together.
The paver count comes from a coverage rate:
pavers per sq ft = 144 ÷ (paver length in × paver width in)
base pavers = patio area × pavers per sq ft → rounded up
buy = base pavers × (1 + waste %) → rounded upThe base and bedding layers are simple volume math from your area and depths:
gravel cu ft = area × (base depth ÷ 12)
gravel tons = gravel cu ft × density (lb/cu ft) ÷ 2,000
sand cu yd = area × (sand depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27The laying pattern you pick — running bond, stacked, herringbone, or basketweave — never changes the paver count. A square foot of patio holds the same number of pavers no matter how they are arranged. What the pattern changes is how many pavers get cut at the edges, which is why the pattern only drives the suggested waste percentage: 5–10% for straight patterns, around 15% for herringbone with its diagonal edge cuts.
Everything the engine assumes — gravel density, joint-sand coverage per bag, edging section length — appears in the assumptions list under the results so you can adjust it to match the actual products you buy.
Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft patio
Say you're planning a 12 × 10 ft rectangular patio with standard 8 × 4 in pavers, a 4-inch gravel base, 1 inch of bedding sand, and 10% waste:
- Coverage rate: 144 ÷ (8 × 4) = 4.5 pavers per sq ft.
- Pavers: 120 sq ft × 4.5 = 540 base pavers; with 10% waste, 594 → buy 594 pavers.
- Base gravel: 120 × (4 ÷ 12) = 40 cu ft = 1.48 cu yd; at 100 lb/cu ft that weighs 40 × 100 ÷ 2,000 = 2.0 tons.
- Bedding sand: 120 × (1 ÷ 12) = 10 cu ft ≈ 0.37 cu yd — order half a yard.
- Joint sand: 120 ÷ 60 sq ft per bag = 2 bags.
- Edging: the 44 ft perimeter ÷ 6 ft sections = 7.3 → 8 sections.

How to measure for a paver patio
- Measure the finished surface, then add working room. Mark the patio outline with paint or string and measure the longest length and width. Crews typically excavate 6–12 inches beyond the finished edge so the base extends past the pavers — that extra base is a good reason to keep a little waste in the gravel number too.
- Irregular shapes: split an L- or T-shaped patio into rectangles, calculate each, and add the areas together. For a rough oval, use the circle shape with the average of the two diameters.
- Check paver dimensions on the pallet tag.A "4 × 8" paver is often 3-7/8 × 7-3/4 in actual. Small differences matter over hundreds of pavers — enter actual dimensions, or use the pavers-per-square-foot rate printed on the tag via the advanced override.
- Plan the slope now.The finished surface should fall about 1/8–1/4 inch per foot away from the house. Over a 12 ft patio that's 1.5–3 inches of drop — set your excavation depths accordingly.

Buying pavers and base materials
- Buy all pavers from one lot. Color varies between manufacturing runs. Buying the waste allowance up front (and keeping a few spares for future repairs) beats matching dye lots a month later.
- Base gravel is sold by the ton or the cubic yard. Ask for crushed stone with fines — often called paver base, crusher run, or road base — not rounded pea gravel, which never locks together. Suppliers usually sell in half-ton or half-yard increments; the calculator rounds up the same way.
- Bedding sand should be concrete (coarse) sand, not fine play sand or limestone screenings. One inch, screeded flat, is the industry standard.
- Polymeric sand coverage varies enormously. A bag might cover 30–100 sq ft depending on joint width and paver thickness. Use the coverage number on the specific bag you buy, and only install it on a dry patio — moisture activates the binder.
- Don't skip edge restraint. Without it, joints open and the field spreads within a season or two. Spiral spikes hold better in soft soil.
Common estimating mistakes
- Estimating pavers with nominal sizes.Using 4 × 8 in for a paver that's actually 3-7/8 × 7-3/4 shorts you roughly 4% — about 25 pavers on a 600-paver patio.
- Forgetting the base is most of the digging. A 4-inch base plus 1 inch of sand plus a 2-3/8 inch paver means excavating about 7.4 inches — several tons of soil to move on even a small patio. Plan for the spoil.
- Ordering gravel by the "yard of coverage" without compaction. Gravel compacts roughly 10–20% when plate-compacted. If your supplier quotes compacted coverage, fine; if not, order a little extra rather than stretching the base thin.
- Using one waste number for every pattern. A running-bond rectangle might waste 5%; the same patio in herringbone with a circular edge can waste 15% or more. Match waste to the pattern and the number of cut edges.
- Buying polymeric sand off the calculator alone. The coverage assumption here (60 sq ft per bag) is a mid-range default — wide-joint tumbled pavers can halve it.
Limitations
This tool estimates rectangular and circular patios only — split complex shapes into pieces and add the results. It assumes a uniform base depth, does not design for vehicle traffic (driveways need a substantially thicker base), and does not account for cutting borders, inlays, or multi-size paver patterns, which change waste in ways only your layout drawing can capture. Soil conditions, frost depth, and drainage vary by site; a local hardscape supplier can confirm the right base depth for your area. Treat the output as a planning and shopping estimate, not an installation spec.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need per square foot?
Divide 144 by the paver's face area in square inches. Standard 8 × 4 in pavers work out to 4.5 per square foot; 6 × 6 in pavers to 4 per square foot; 6 × 9 in to about 2.67. Multiply by your patio area, then add 5–15% waste depending on the pattern.
How deep should the gravel base be under a paver patio?
Four to six inches of compacted crushed stone is typical for foot-traffic patios on decent soil. Poorly draining clay, soft soil, or freeze–thaw climates justify 6 inches or more, and anything a vehicle will drive on needs a much thicker base — often 8 to 12 inches. Compact in 2-inch lifts as you build up.
Does the laying pattern change how many pavers I need?
Not directly — a square foot holds the same number of pavers in any pattern. Patterns change the waste from edge cuts: running bond and stacked layouts typically waste 5–10%, while herringbone's diagonal cuts push waste toward 15%. Set the waste percentage to match your pattern.
How much polymeric sand do I need?
Roughly one bag per 60 square feet is a mid-range planning number, but real coverage runs anywhere from about 30 to 100 square feet per bag depending on joint width and paver thickness. Check the coverage chart on the specific product you buy, and adjust the coverage assumption in the calculator's advanced options to match.
Can I lay pavers directly on dirt or sand without gravel?
It almost always fails. Bare soil shifts with moisture and frost, and a thick sand-only bed ruts and settles unevenly. The compacted gravel base is what spreads loads and drains water; the one-inch sand layer is only a leveling course. Skipping the base is the most common cause of wavy, sunken patios.
Should I use geotextile fabric under a paver base?
On clay or soft, wet soils, a woven separation fabric keeps the gravel from slowly pressing into the subgrade, preserving base thickness. On firm, sandy, well-drained soil it's optional. If you use it, buy your patio area plus about 15% for seam overlap, which is what the calculator adds.
